Internships benefit students and employers

Any unemployed individual will tell you that it`s difficult to find a job in today`s competitive market. Employers need dependable, experienced employees, and recent graduates need experience in order to compete for available jobs. At times, this dilemma feels much like the chicken versus the egg question. Newcomers to the job search process wonder how they can gain experience if they cannot find an entry-level job. Employers, struggling to keep a business afloat in today`s economy, want to find the best employees for their money.

According to Ohio State Marion Coordinator of Career Services, Will Smith, an internship may be the answer for both employers and potential employees.

"Experience is the key to getting a job," said Smith, "By matching businesses with potential workers, we serve both our students and the business community."

Ms. Teresa Staats, Manager of Marketing Services at Consolidated Electric Cooperative, represents one of the many businesses now participating in an internship program. When Consolidated Electric needed a part-time marketing and graphic design employee, she opted to list the position with Ohio State Marion career services and other community colleges.

"We`ve had interns for the past six to eight years," Ms. Staats said. "Anyone who goes to school and works, especially when they`re working in their chosen field, is a highly motivated individual. It [employing interns] is a wonderful experience that enables us to keep good talent in the community."

There are several ways for area businesses to access the free, user-friendly career services program at Ohio State Marion. Job and internship posting forms are available on campus, as well as on the university’s career services web site at, http://www.marion.ohio-state.edu/career.

Whether searching for a skilled intern to fill an unpaid or paid position, or in need of part-time or seasonal employees, the university’s career services job boards enable area businesses to reach potential workers, while avoiding advertising fees. Job postings sent vie e-mail or from the web page will be forwarded to list serv subscribers. All jobs are posted for thirty days to the job board located in Morrill Hall on the Marion campus. Employers are free to list their requests as often as they wish. All businesses and anyone with an Ohio State e-mail address can access the electronic job lists, and everyone who enters Morrill Hall can view the list of available positions.

Smith also invites area businesses to participate in the annual Career and Job Fair, to be held on February 23 on the Marion campus.

“This year Ohio State Marion and Marion Technical College are joining forces to offer our students and employees the chance to connect,” explained Smith.

Smith feels every type of business has the ability to make use of this valuable tool to reach students focusing on a wide range of subjects and looking for a variety of job opportunities. Many students, both in the traditional and non-traditional age ranges, attend the job fair. In addition to general education courses, Ohio State Marion features five different major fields of study. Employers searching for individuals skilled in the fields of English, history, psychology, general business or early/middle childhood education may be particularly interested in job fair participation.

As always, Smith encourages all Ohio State Marion students to see him for help with everything from career counseling to learning effective job search strategies.
